What are some animals that got screwed over by evolution?

Evolution, as a natural process, generally leads to the optimization of species for survival within their respective environments. However, certain animals have faced challenges and consequences that can be perceived as detrimental. One example is the dodo, a flightless bird native to Mauritius. In its isolated island habitat, the dodo lacked natural predators, which allowed it to evolve without the need for strong flying capabilities. Unfortunately, when humans arrived with introduced animals, the dodo's naive and trusting nature, coupled with its inability to escape threats by flight, led to its rapid extinction in the 17th century.

Another example involves species facing difficulties due to rapid environmental changes. Evolution operates over extended periods, but sudden alterations in ecosystems, often driven by human activities, can outpace a species' ability to adapt. Climate change, habitat destruction, and pollution are among the factors that can challenge the adaptive capacities of various animals, putting them at risk.

While the concept of an animal being "screwed over" by evolution may be anthropomorphic, it does highlight instances where certain species face severe challenges or extinction due to a misalignment between their adaptations and changing conditions. The complexities of ecological dynamics and the impact of human activities further underscore the delicate balance that shapes the fate of different species in the ongoing process of evolution.
